Welcome to Chapleau the friendliest town in the North. Situated in the heart of the Boreal Forest near the height of land which separates the Atlantic and Arctic Watersheds, a wilderness vacation playground awaits you. Chapleau is known as the gateway to the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve, an area of more than 700,000 hectares and home to a number of wildlife viewing stations and drive in tourism opportunities.
The Chapleau area is served by numerous camps, lodges and campgrounds while our district contains four provincial parks with camping facilities. If remote tourism is what you are seeking, the area’s three fly-in services are ready for takeoff! If you prefer to rest and relax in town any one of our motels or bed and breakfasts will cater to your every need. Ontario’s finest wilderness is right on our doorstep and offers some of the best fishing, hunting, canoeing and boating opportunities to be found anywhere.
Chapleau was crowned Canada's Ultimate Fishing Town 2011 by the World Fishing Network's online contest. The contest concluded in June when over 500,000 online votes were cast and Chapleau, Ontario was chosen as the Ultimate Fishing Town in Canada. Chapleau has a wide variety of fish species to choose from including northern pike, walleye, smallmouth bass, whitefish, yellow perch and numerous speces of trout.
Whether you are an inexperienced or extreme angler, our hundreds of lakes and rivers can accommodate to your preferences. Have it be shore or boat fishing, remote fly-in or portage fishing, or just a stroll down one of Chapleau’s rivers, we have what you want! For the ATV enthusiast, countless roads and trails offer an amazing variety of riding experiences.
