Lighthouses

McKay Island Lighthouse

Family getaways can sometimes be difficult to plan; everyone wants to visit somewhere different. Have you ever thought about sleeping in a lighthouse? No? Well you can do this in Algoma Country!

Located in Bruce Mines, Ontario, McKay Island Lighthouse offers its guests the opportunity to experience the mystique of staying in a lighthouse. Built in 1907 by the Canadian Government in response to an increase in marine traffic by the timber industry replacing the main industry of copper mining in the area, this towering structure stands ten meters high. In 1967, the lighthouse was sold to a local and efforts were made to restore this beautiful beacon for others to enjoy.

Because the lighthouse is no longer in use, it has become a peaceful sanctuary for visitors to this area of Algoma. The view of your chosen accommodations includes: freighters during the summer months, the change of colours in the fall and for those willing to climb the ladder to the “widow’s walk”, an amazing panoramic view of the North Channel. This vacation spot allows you to fish, canoe, kayak, hike or bike; explore the islands, or in the winter months, snowmobile on the great trails that the area has to offer. This is the sort of adventure that makes a suitable romantic getaway, family vacation or just a small vacation for those who need a weekend away.

Accessible by car year round, the McKay Island Lighthouse has comfortable sleeping quarters with many amenities for your stay; you can even read the Lighthouse Keeper’s Journals if you wish too. This self-catering private hideaway is great for those who wish to escape from the stresses of daily life for a time; for those that wish to host an event such a wedding, family reunion or another celebration, this is also a great place! The Lighthouse Lounge offers banquet facilities for various sized groups; your guests will enjoy the atmosphere of a large puddingstone fireplace and the deck leading out to the view of Lake Huron.

Shoal Island Lighthouse

The Shoal Island Lighthouse was constructed in 1910 (replacing the original 1880 structure) to aid marine traffic along the north Marina Lighthouseshore of St. Joseph Island. Initially the lighthouse was a navigational aid for passenger and freight (notably timber and commercial fishing) vessels bound for Richards Landing from other North Shore and Lake Huron communities. The Lighthouse was manned by a keeper until 1957, and thus has a unique structure with a hip-roofed dwelling portion and a wooden light tower. The Lighthouse is still functional as a navigational aid for recreational boaters; it is also a distinctive landmark of the island and is of high historical interest as part of our heritage and culture.

Escape to the beauty of Algoma Country in Northern Ontario and visit a piece of history.
