Description: Between 1796 and 1812, Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site of Canada was a thriving community of soldiers, Aboriginal people, and fur traders. The fort was constructed on the southeast shore of St. Joseph Island in 1796, and became the most westerly British military post in Upper Canada and a key link along the fur trade routes. In 1814, the Americans, in retaliation for the British occupation of Fort Michilimackinac, destroyed Fort St. Joseph burning it to the ground. Today, visitors can travel back in time using the magic of modern cinematic technology, dress up as a British soldier, or feel the breeze off the St. Mary's River as they walk amoung the ruins of the fort. A modern interpretation and reception centre with knowledgeable staff is open daily from June 1st to mid-October
