Moments in Algoma: A Group of Seven Experience

Virtual Event

What circumstances led the artist Lawren Harris, the driving force behind the Group of Seven movement, to come north to the Algoma region of Canada in May and September of 1918?

Produced by Theatre in Motion (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) and sponsored by Friends of the Ermatinger Clergue National Historic Site to mark the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Group of Seven. This monologue brings to the audience, Lawren Harris as an older gentleman who shares his memories of those first defining moments in Northern Ontario.

This filmed version of the live show has run for 5 summers at the Ermatinger-Clergue National Historic Site in Sault Ste. Marie. Lawren Harris steps from the theatre setting into the outdoors amidst the real splendour of Autumn. This performance incorporates the philosophical writings of Harris and excerpts from the letters J.E.H. MacDonald wrote to his wife Joan from the Agawa Canyon, painting a picture of the time and of the place.
