Ontario Fishing Regulations, Fish Management Zones
Ontario is 415,000 square miles, larger than the countries of France and Spain combined. With about 250,000 lakes and over 100,000 km of river, this is a big land mass with lots of water. Ontario divides the province into 20 fisheries management zones to manage the fishing in water bodies.
In Algoma Country, there are 5 zones covering the region: Zone 3, Zone 7, Zone 8, Zone 9 and Zone 10. In Zone 10, fishing large and smallmouth bass located in all waters north of Highway 17 and, all waters west of where the east bank of the Serpent River crosses Highway 17 is open all year.
Before fishing, have a copy of the Ontario Fishing Regulations with you. You can get a paper copy or download the regulations document to your mobile device. The regs have everything you need to know about fishing license requirements, catch and possession limits, seasons, species, how to transport fish, ice fishing, bait, and what to know about invasive species.
Many fishing lodges in the area emphasize sustainable practices, including catch and release, helping preserve the natural balance and ensure these fisheries thrive for future generations.
Who Needs A License To Fish In Ontario
There are 2 types of fishing licences in Ontario:
- Conservation Fishing Licence – reduced catch and possession limit ideal for anglers who want to live-release majority of fish caught
- Sport Fishing Licence – ideal for anglers who want full catch and possession fishing privileges.
When fishing, you must have an Outdoors Card for Licence Summary whenever you fish. Outdoors Cards are valid for 3 years.
You Don’t Need To Purchase A Fishing Licence If:
- You have an accessible parking permit issued under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act or a Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) national identity
- You are an Ontario or Canadian resident under the age of 18 or 65 years of age or older
- You require the direct assistance of another person to fish and to follow applicable laws due to a disability defined in the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act
- An Ontario resident who is an active member or veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces. In this case, you need to have one of the following: Canadian Forces Identification Card, Record of Service Card or Canadian Armed Forces Veteran’s Service Card

Four Bait Management Zones exist to:
- limit the movement of baitfish and leeches in Ontario
- restrict the transportation of baitfish or leeches dead or alive in or out of BMZs
- ensure proper harvesting of baitfish or leeches by anglers in their home BMZ
- explain purchasing baitfish and leeches and disposal
