Ready to grab your camera, plan your route, and get ready for a road trip that brings you closer to nature, adventure, and the stunning colours of the Canadian fall? Let’s go!
Bruce Mines
Located along the Trans Canada Highway 17 between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie is the beautiful small town of Bruce Mines. An ideal rest stop along the North Channel to stop and stretch your legs. Hike or walk The Bruce Mines Trail, which provides a scenic path to stop and take a stroll and enjoy the amazing views. It’s a beautiful hiking/walking trail that allows you to step back in time and experience the history of Bruce Mines the way it was.
Stop in for a bite to eat, and take a coffee to go from the highly recommended The Copper Bean Cafe. With a cozy atmosphere, a delicious home-cooked menu, tasty pastries and excellent coffee – there’s something for everyone. I would recommend the Maple Chili Chicken sandwich!
Havilland Lookout Trail
On your way to Batchawana Bay stop at a hidden gem trail that’s located in Goulais River. The Havilland Lookout Trail hasn’t hit the popular hiking chart yet. The entrance to the trail is marked by a sign on the side of the highway. You can either park at the Havilland Shores Beach or McCauley’s Havilland Bay Hotel. The trail is a 4.2 km well-maintained out-and-back trail with a gorgeous waterfall and incredible views of Havilland Bay.
Sunnd Nordic Eco Resort
Come experience a truly unique stay on the shores of Lake Superior in the heart of Algoma Country. Sunnd Nordic Eco Resort offers an incredible space where guests can experience a slower, cozy way of living amongst nature.
Spend a couple of nights in your own luxurious dome equipped with its own private wood-fired hot tub, fully stocked fire pit, full kitchen, full washroom with spa robes & slippers, dining area, seating area, queen-sized bed, and breakfast foods included with eggs, pancake mix, coffee and tea. Plus they gift you local maple syrup!
Chapleau Hub
St. John’s Anglican Church is the oldest public building remaining in Chapleau. It is also a beautiful building filled with character and a rich history. In 2016, under new ownership the Church was transformed into a Community On the lower level, we host a licensed restaurant. Stonewalls has the only waterfront patio and wood-fired oven in town.
Aubrey Falls
A must-stop destination. Located in Aubrey Falls Provincial Park, is considered a non-operating park and is very small with minimal amenities. There are washrooms and a few picnic tables. But don’t let that discourage you. This short but incredible hike is only 2km, and still very much off the beaten path. The falls are unique as the flow of water is dam-controlled due to its location. Pack a picnic, put on your hiking shoes, and grab your camera to enjoy this incredible spot.
Northern Skies Resort
Located off the beautiful HWY 129 is Northern Skies Resort. A cozy, and quaint resort with stunning lake views and private access to beautiful Chub Lake in Algoma Country. Chub Lake is a large, quiet spring-fed lake that connects to three other lakes, all of which are surrounded mostly by uninhabited crown land and contain a variety of species for those wanting to try their hand at fishing. The resort is located in the heart of the beautiful Mississaugi River Valley, well known for having some of the most breathtaking scenic drives and hikes in the province, including Aubrey Falls and Rock Candy Mountain.
Guests can choose the vintage cottages built in the 1940s by the current owner’s great-grandparents. These beautifully maintained cabins exude a cozy vintage vibe while providing all the modern conveniences you need for a comfortable and relaxing stay.
Alternatively, they offer newly built or renovated modern within the last ten years. These cottages are bright and airy with special touches. Like wood-burning stoves, screened-in porches, high ceilings, hardwood floors and washers and dryers – that add that extra feeling of elegance to your wilderness getaway.
Rock Candy Lookout
This hike located off of HWY 129 is a volunteer-based trail still very much off the radar. Although the trail is a 3 km round trip, the majority of the Rock Candy trail is uphill before bringing you to incredible lookout points.
Algoma Country is about soaking up the incredible scenery, uncovering hidden gems, and making memories you’ll never forget. Whether hiking to waterfalls, taking in those incredible viewpoints, or exploring cozy little towns, Algoma has something special waiting around every corner. Trust me, Algoma Country is the perfect place to disconnect, explore, and just enjoy the ride.
