WE LOVE A CAMPFIRE BUT…DON’T MOVE FIREWOOD

To help Ontario prevent invasive forest pests here are things you should do when building a campfire while camping in Algoma Country:

• Do not bring firewood anywhere you plan to camp (private campgrounds, provincial parks, national parks, crown land)
• Buy local firewood from the campground you are camping at (if they do not sell firewood, they will direct you to where to buy it locally)
• Do not remove firewood from any campground

We recommend only buying what you plan to use. This is economical and leaves you without the feeling of leaving behind what you didn’t use.

TOP TEN REASONS TO GO CAMPING IN ALGOMA

1. It’s quiet and peaceful. You’re surrounded by beautiful wilderness. There’s nothing else to say!
2. Dark Sky Adventures. These are abundant as we have little light pollution. Star gaze to see planets and constellations and if you’re up late enough and monitoring them, you may even see the Northern Lights!
3. Hiking trails. There are many hiking trails across Algoma Country where you’ll see scenic vistas, experience different types of forests, waterfalls or simply a nature walk.
4. There are hundreds of lakes, rivers and streams for you to canoe, kayak, stand-up paddle, and go boating. Some are even historic waterways.
5. Cooking on an open fire. One of our favourite meals in the region is shore lunch. Others are smores, hotdogs, and Bannock. But don’t let that limit your creativity!
6. Fishing. This region has excellent fishing for walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, brook trout and more. Get a list here and start packing your tackle and gear.
7. With more trees than people, wildlife is abundant in Algoma. From small animals to birds to large animals like deer, moose or bear. Remember to keep your distance from wildlife and please don’t feed the animals!
