Multi-Species Fishing in Algoma

I’m grateful to have spent quite a bit of time in the Algoma Country region over the past few years, exploring a wide range of fishing experiences. From open-water fishing by boat or kayak in pursuit of bass, to exploring remote back lakes for trout, and venturing onto frozen lakes for ice fishing, I’ve been fortunate to sample many of the opportunities this beautiful region offers. The scenic waters and rugged landscapes keep me coming back time and again, along with the multi-species fishing opportunities found throughout. This article highlights some of my most memorable experiences in the region so far.

Multi-Species On The North Channel Of Lake Huron

Late this past summer, my partner Eric and I spent a few days at Blue Heron Resort, nestled along the shores of the Spanish River in Walford. The Spanish River flows into the North Channel of Lake Huron, and with light winds during our visit, we decided to take full advantage and get out on the big water, launching our boat at the Spanish Municipal Marina. Over three days, we explored the Whalesback Channel and North Channel of Lake Huron, targeting a variety of species. We got into quality smallmouth bass and a few unexpected rainbow trout caught on bass gear. The trip started with a beautiful 27-inch walleye as my first catch, and Eric also landed a chunky northern pike before we got into many beautiful smallmouth. It was a memorable and action-packed fishing experience, and you can catch it all on video:

Bass Fishing Adventures In Elliot Lake

Over the past three years, I’ve made several trips to the Elliot Lake area, targeting smallmouth bass on numerous occasions. My first bass fishing adventure here took place at Flack Lake, located just under 30 kilometres north of the City of Elliot Lake. Eric and I visited during the summer and stayed at picturesque Mississagi Provincial Park, taking our fishing kayaks out and catching bass after bass on this breathtaking body of water.

A couple of my other kayak adventures here have taken place at Laurentian Lodge, located north of Elliot Lake on the shores of Flack Lake and surrounded by numerous other small lakes. The lodge is nestled amongst towering evergreens and surrounded by forest, with a waterfall cascading from Flack Lake into Mikel Lake directly behind the on-site restaurant. I’ve been fortunate to explore several of the lakes in the area, though I’ve barely scratched the surface.

Trout Fishing In Elliot Lake

And last but not least, I’ve had some very memorable experiences targeting trout in the Elliot Lake area. This has included fishing for lake trout and brook trout at the remote The Lodge at Ten Mile Lake, targeting splake during a solo kayak fishing trip just outside the city, and venturing into back lakes in search of brook trout during the winter. The Elliot Lake area is known for a wide variety of trout fishing opportunities, with both natural populations and stocked fisheries.
