Smallmouth bass are ambush predators. Look for them in places that provide cover from which they can make forays to grab unsuspecting prey. On lakes, these include half-submerged trees and logs, boathouses and docks. Also target the shadows, as smallmouth bass typically choose shade over the sunny spots. Most northern lakes are rocky, and drop-offs, rocky points, and large underwater rocks are among their favourite haunts. In rivers, bass behaves a lot like trout, staying near the fastest current, especially current breaks next to still water with deep holes, where they will hold and feed even through the brightest part of sunny days.

Northern Ontario — a gorgeous abundance of clear lakes, rivers, and streams. The opportunities for smallmouth bass, in particular, are second to none. Pound for pound, they’re one of the toughest and most spectacular species.

In Zone 10 Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass are open all year in all waters north of Highway 17 and all waters west of where the east bank of the Serpent River crosses Highway 17.
