AlgomaTrad presents a summer full of hands-on heritage and arts programs, including workshops in blacksmithing/benchwork, painting, paper maché sculptures, and basket-weaving, in addition to three Acoustic Café evenings, a community dance, and a few tune sessions open to all! At the AlgomaTrad Centre, 1249 F&G Line on St. Joseph Island. Blacksmithing/Benchwork – with blacksmith Denis Frechette, Throughout the month of July, there are several options for beginners or experienced participants. Classes do not need to be taken in order – projects have been designed so that all the information needed to do each project will be covered within that individual class. Registration is required and includes materials.


Painting in Cubism – with local artist Taimi Poldmaa, Tuesday, July 8th & Wednesday, July 9th – (1:00 pm – 4:00 pm each day). Cost for the 2-day workshop, including materials, is $100 +HST.

Develop your painting technique in a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. Participants will have the opportunity to explore different methods and complete a fun project: creating portraits in the style of cubism using acrylic paints!


The Fabulous BeastiaryA Paper Maché Sculpture Workshop with Isabelle MichaudTuesday, July 15th, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Ready to make some exciting sculptures? In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to create fun paper maché sculptures of animals or other fantastical creatures – a great way to spend a few hours for kids, adults, and families!

This workshop is directed at participants ages 10 & up, as it requires following directions.


Basket-weaving with Heather PepperSaturday, July 19th, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Spend a productive and creative day making your own market basket/tote. Tools and materials are provided, and participants will have a completed project to take home at the day’s end. The small class size, limited to six participants, will be a perfect, intimate learning environment – but don’t wait to register, this workshop will fill up fast!

Participants with some basket-making experience are preferred, as this is a fairly challenging project and most suitable for adults.


Come & Learn Argentinian Folk Dance with Ana & Maya Rawn!Tuesday, July 29th, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Registration is not required, but we’d love to know if you’re planning to come! Feel free to send an email to tori@algomatrad.ca. Come and learn some Argentinian folk dance (tango and more)! This is the perfect way to get geared up for the Payadora Ensemble concert coming up on July 31st. The cost for the workshop is by donation.


AlgomaTrad Acoustic Café Nights – Tuesday, July 8th, 15 & 22nd, 7:00 pm

The Acoustic Café evenings are a great opportunity for local musicians to share songs or tunes in a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. Everyone is encouraged to join the circle and take turns sharing music; others can help out if they know the song! Anyone is welcome to come to listen as well. Community Dance!Saturday, July 19th, 7:00 pm

Join us at the AlgomaTrad Centre Pavilion for an all-ages Community Dance on Saturday, July 19th. The dance will feature live traditional music, called contra and square dances, in addition to a few waltzes! The dances are beginner-friendly, everyone is welcome with no experience necessary. There will be an introduction to basic dance moves at 7:00 pm, which will progress into the dance. Suggested donation $15/adult.
