From Sault Ste. Marie, this loop around St. Joseph Island is a great way to spend the day. The Island North Drive is a must-do as there is very little traffic on these country roads, which makes it appealing. This loop brings you through rolling countryside and small farming communities, then branches off to St. Joseph Island. You’ll find many places to eat, places to stay, shop, interesting sites and attractions, and scenic stops with views of Lake Huron.

After the island, return to Highway 17 to the communities of Bruces Mines and Thessalon, then take Highway 129. Mississagi Valley is one of the most scenic places in Ontario. From Hwy 129, follow Hwy 556 at Ranger Lake. This wilderness drive leads through the beautiful forests of Algoma to Searchmont and back to Hwy 17. Although this drive can be completed in a day, there are plenty of things to do along the route and you’ll want to make it at least a 2-day drive.
