The AlgomaTrad Summer Concert Series is back for 2025, featuring 3 groups of some of Canada’s finest traditional and folk musicians including multi-instrumentalists and songwriters Hannah & Nathan on June 26, JUNO-nominated Nova Scotia sibling duo Cassie & Maggie on July 24, and beloved tango ensemble Payadora, recipients of the 2024 Folk Music Ontario Album of the year, on July 31. The Series occurs at the AlgomaTrad Centre Pavilion, 1249 F&G Line, St. Joseph Island, a gorgeous and intimate timberframe outdoor concert venue.
Hannah & Nathan – Thursday, June 26, 7:30pm – Hannah Shira Naiman and Nathan Smith (The Barrel Boys/Vinta) are acclaimed songwriters and multi-instrumentalists, each with a strong national presence in folk music. Both are Canadian Folk Music Award winners, Hannah for Traditional Singer of the Year and Nathan for Composer of the Year with super group Vinta. When the two joined for double-bill performances in 2022, Hannah’s clawhammer banjo fit perfectly with Nathan’s fiddle and guitar playing, but their undeniable strength lies in airtight vocal harmonies. Hannah & Nathan blend their voices and unique folk music backgrounds to create a distinct sound, rooted in an Appalachian old-time style.
Cassie & Maggie – Thursday, July 24, 7:30pm – “With a sound that reflects generations of Nova Scotia fiddlers, and a youthful charm that literally pops out from their recordings, Cassie and Maggie ensure that the true folk ways of their home community reaches the broader world.” -Penguin Eggs Magazine. With over 17 combined Canadian Folk Music, East Coast Music, and Music Nova Scotia awards and nominations, the JUNO-Nominated powerhouse duo, Cassie and Maggie, emerge as an unstoppable force on the global folk stage. Unleashing a magnetic energy, they seamlessly weave their deep Celtic heritage with contemporary influences. Committed to not just preserving but also propelling Nova Scotia’s folk traditions into new realms, Cassie and Maggie bring an exhilarating energy that is both timeless and irresistibly modern.
Payadora – Thursday, July 31, 7:30pm – Payadora is an award-winning chamber music ensemble that performs original compositions as well as original arrangements of Argentinian/Uruguayan Tango and Folk music. Made up of a group of players who are each musical powerhouses in their own right, this “super group” has combined their deep knowledge of tango with their classical, jazz and world music backgrounds to create something entirely new. Payadora is officially endorsed by the Argentinian Consulate in Toronto for its adherence to the spirit of tango. Their performances convey joy, virtuosity, humour and their intense passion for the music that they play.
