Nature lovers and recreation enthusiasts will find true wilderness treasures in Algoma Country. Our region is home to the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve, the world’s largest crown game preserve. This beautiful sanctuary is located in the heart of the Canadian Shield. The Preserve encompasses 2 million acres of Algoma’s landscape. Moose, black bear, bald eagle and loons are just some of the many wildlife that inhabits the preserve. It is not unusual to see animals oblivious to human disturbances. There are amazing opportunities to photograph wildlife in their natural surroundings. You can enter the preserve by road through the town of Chapleau, or by canoe. Follow historic waterways that flow from Lake Superior and Hudson Bay from the height of land that bisects the preserve.

There are opportunities to birdwatch in Algoma. Northern Ontario is a gold mine for many different species of birds and is home to a variety of owls, sandpipers and flycatchers. Bald eagles, loons, gulls, grouse, woodpeckers and different kinds of waterfowl can be found. There have been over 95 confirmed species of birds that live in Algoma during different times of the year. The untouched beauty of Algoma Country has made it a birdwatcher’s haven.
