Walleye (or Pickerel) can be fished throughout the Algoma region and the fishing is in a class of its own in this northerly part of the province. The Great Lakes, remote inland lakes and even river systems are home to this particular species of fish. Most of the waters here are classic examples of what water should look like for this fish. The typical presentation of a jig and minnow is without a doubt the most effective technique to land that big fish. Set out at daybreak when walleye are feeding the heaviest. Drifting over weed lines and drop-offs is a solid tactic to focus on this fish. For both anglers and fly fishers, fighting an Algoma walleye/pickerel is an incredible experience you won’t forget. And no matter where you catch’em, there’s always a delicious shore lunch to be had!

Many of the resorts & lodges in the region have access to lakes with excellent walleye/pickerel fishing. There are also year-round lodges that offer ice fishing for walleye in the winter months. Walleye season opens on the third Saturday in May and closes on December 31 each year. Dusk and dawn are the ideal times to catch this fish. These fish are most active during the spring and fall seasons.
