Hiawatha Highlands is located in the north east corner of Sault Ste. Marie, ON. It has a rich and deep history in the Sault, where this pristine outdoor, back country, play ground has been preserved and lovingly maintained for generations.
Residents of the Soo are both proud and protective of this more than 3,000-acre parcel of land within and just outside of their city. We’re a premier destination by guests and travelers from around the world who are welcomed to enjoy its majestic beauty. Land owned by the local conservation authority, Kinsmen Club, private owners and by the province of Ontario has been for the past 60 years, leased for 6 months of the year, by the Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club.
Our expertly groomed trails have evolved and expanded over the years and today Hiawatha Highlands offers more than 50 km of Nordic ski trails (both classic and skate ski double track) Two km of the trails are lit at night. There are more than 7 km of snowshoe trails, with special trails designed for fat biker enthusiasts. Winter sport events and activities take place throughout the season along with a newly sculpted terrain park to add to the fun.
All of this located just 20 minutes north of the Michigan/Ontario International border. Our trail systems cater to both the beginner and advanced skier. Whichever trail you decide to use, you will be surrounded by the soothing sounds of whispering pines, the magnificent views of the ice falls and constant breathtaking scenery of this true winter wonderland.
